Room to Breathe: making room, in melodic house and progressive trance

Room to Breathe is two hours of melodic house and progressive trance from our Deep Bloom sound, for a night drive or a long reflective hour. The groove runs from the first beat at 117 BPM: a four on the floor kick, a rolling bass locked to it, crisp claps and three plucked electric guitars in the foreground, one low, one answering, one high. A low cello carries a recurring three note river motif as the singer's melodic twin. One mature male bass baritone sings every song in a very low, warm, weathered voice, and saves his one soaring lift for the final chorus.

We wrote the songs around one slow change. A woman learns to make room for her own needs and to receive ordinary care. The first song begins with a cup left beside the sink, and the fear of leaving any proof that she lived in a room. By its last chorus the cups stand together: "I left my cup beside your cup". Later a suitcase closes on two pairs of shoes, there is a little room for my shoes, and a coat is allowed to fall on a chair. A hand learns to stay open, "Let my hand stay open", and lets the next moment happen in. Each chorus returns with one line changed, so the small object at its center ends up meaning something new.

The picture is a sequence of painted still scenes in an Art Nouveau style, with fine flowing contours and botanical ornament woven into real rooms and streets. Elara, an original Signal Art character, is the painted heroine. The scenes return to the same places as the songs move on: a kitchen, an entry, a riverside, a cafe, a train, a market, a garden, a landing. Her journey runs from the first cup to an open morning.

Put it on for a night drive, late work or a quiet hour of reflection, and let the river motif carry you.

I left my cup beside your cup

There was a little room for my shoes

Let my hand stay open

Love without a ledger

Room to Breathe asks what changes when care is no longer counted as a debt.

A second cup or a coat on a chair gives another person's presence a usable place. These objects do not settle a score. They make a shared life possible without requiring its gestures to be equivalent.

The long musical journey gives this release from accounting time to become believable. Making room for an imperfect life includes allowing some things to remain unequal, unfinished or freely given, while keeping each person's dignity intact.

A question to carry: Where could you stop keeping score without abandoning yourself?
