The Winding Key (Part I)

Signal Art · A closer reading

Keeping time for another

The Winding Key, Part I, gives devotion the shape of a clock tended beside a breath.

The repeated act of winding makes time intimate. In the full song, the key moves from one hand to another, suggesting that care can inherit a person's rhythm without being able to guarantee its continuation.

The ritual does not solve mortality. Its value lies in refusing to let uncertainty make attention pointless. A hand can keep doing something loving even when it cannot keep everything safe.

A question to carry: What repeated act says that you are still here with someone?

devotion · care · time
