Tar on Other Roofs (Part I)

Signal Art · A closer reading

The repairs we keep postponing

Tar on Other Roofs places professional competence beside a neglected intimate obligation.

The singer can seal a neighbour's roof while a father sleeps beneath rain. That contrast prevents useful work from becoming automatic proof of goodness. Being needed elsewhere can also become a shelter from the person one has failed.

The returning refrain keeps the contradiction open. The work invites a difficult inventory of care: which duties receive our best hands, and which are indefinitely promised a tomorrow that never acquires a roof?

A question to carry: Whose need have you postponed while being dependable for everyone else?

care · accountability · labour
